Questions answered.
Without the jargon.
Questions about pricing, Making Tax Digital or getting started? You’ll find clear answers to the things people ask us most.
Getting Started
I am already using an accountant. Can I switch?
Yes. Switching to Brease is usually much easier than people expect. Once you’ve signed an authority allowing us to contact your current accountant, we’ll take care of the handover and guide you through the rest of the process.
Do I need accounting software?
Your Brease package includes all the software you need. We’ll set everything up for you and keep it up to date. If you already use software such as Xero or QuickBooks, we’ll simply ask you to invite us to your account so we can manage it on your behalf.
What information do I need to provide and why?
To set up your Brease account, we’ll ask for a few key details about you and your business. This helps us make sure your account is accurate, your tax obligations are met and we can provide the right level of support from day one.
Depending on your circumstances, we’ll usually ask for:
- Your contact details so we can communicate with you.
- Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) to identify your tax records.
- Your National Insurance number to verify your identity.
- A copy of your photo ID and proof of address to meet legal anti-money laundering requirements.
- Your business information, including the type of work you do and your expected annual turnover.
- An estimate of your monthly transactions so we can recommend the right Brease package.
- Your bank details so your business transactions can be securely connected to your accounting software. If you don’t have a business bank account yet, we’ll simply need details of your business transactions. While it’s not essential, we do recommend having a separate business bank account to help keep your records organised.
- Details of your previous accountant, if you’re switching, so we can make the handover as straightforward as possible.
Once we have everything we need, we’ll set up your Brease account and guide you through the next steps.
Who is behind Brease?
Brease is powered by North Devon Accounts, an established accountancy practice with over 20 years of experience supporting sole traders and small businesses across the UK.
We’ve combined the knowledge and reassurance of a traditional accountancy practice with a modern online service that’s simple to use and built around the needs of sole traders.
When you join Brease, you’re not handing your finances to a faceless platform. You’re supported by a qualified team of real people who are here when you need advice, guidance or answers to your questions.
Pricing & Plans
What if I go over my average transactions?
Don’t worry, the occasional busy month won’t automatically move you to a different package.
We review transaction volumes every three months to make sure you’re on the package that’s right for your business. If you’ve consistently exceeded your package limits, or your transaction levels have reduced, we’ll contact you to discuss moving to a more suitable package before making any changes.
That means you’ll never pay for more than you need, and you’ll always have the capacity your business requires.
How can I cancel?
We hope you’ll stick around, but if Brease isn’t the right fit for you, cancelling is straightforward.
Like a monthly subscription, your monthly payment covers that month’s service and is taken at the start of the month. If you decide to cancel, simply let us know before your next payment is due. We’ll continue looking after you until the end of your current paid month, and your subscription won’t renew.
Simple, straightforward and completely in your control.
No long contracts. No awkward conversations. Just a quick message and we’ll take care of the rest.
Why am I paying for Making Tax Digital (MTD) if my turnover isn't high enough yet?
It’s a fair question.
At Brease, we manage all clients using MTD-ready software and processes, regardless of turnover. We do this because MTD is gradually being introduced to more sole traders, and the qualifying income threshold is expected to reduce over the coming years.
Rather than asking you to change systems later, we help you get set up correctly from the start.
This means your records are organised, your information is stored digitally, and you’re already prepared if your income grows or the rules change.
If you’re not yet required to comply with Making Tax Digital, we’ll continue to prepare and submit your annual Self Assessment tax return instead. Once you meet the MTD criteria, we’ll seamlessly move you across without you needing to change the way you work.
For most sole traders, it’s the easiest approach. You can focus on running your business while knowing your accounting is already set up for whatever comes next.
Are there any hidden fees?
Using Brease
What happens if I fall behind?
Life and business can get busy. If you’re struggling to keep records up to date, let us know. We’ll help you get back on track.
How will I know how much tax to save?
We’ll provide estimates based on the information available, helping you plan ahead and avoid surprises.
Will Brease submit my Tax Return?
Yes. All our packages include preparation and submission of either your MTD Returns or your Self Assessment tax return.
How often do in need to log in?
There’s no need to log in every day. We recommend uploading your receipts and invoices regularly so your records stay up to date and your bookkeeping remains accurate. Many clients log in weekly, while others prefer to do it little and often throughout the month.
We’ll take care of the accounting, prepare your Making Tax Digital submissions and complete your Self Assessment. If we need anything from you, we’ll get in touch.
